RELIGION AND CULTURE

The original belief system of Malians, whether Bambara, Peulh or Sonraï, was animist. This form of worship based on indigenous cults : ‘komo’ for the Bambara; ‘kanaga’ for the Dogon; ‘Nya’ for the Senoufos or ‘holé’ for the Sonraï, is practiced by only a small percent of the population today. Despite the strong presence of Islam in almost all urban and rural parts of the country, some 5% of the population in the south and center of the country continue to follow the traditional ritual practices.Despite the fact that the majorirty of malians are moslems(more than 90%),everybody is free to practice the religion he or she wants. So in addition to moslems and animists,we have also some christians.
